A fan-favourite character from J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels and legendarium, Tom Bombadil, will appear in Prime Video’s The Rings of Power Season 2, as per Variety. He dwells in the Old Forest with his wife, Goldberry, and is shrouded in mystery.
Tom Bombadil first appeared in 1934 via a prominent poem, “The Adventures of Tom Bombadil”, which also included his wife, Goldberry, along with the barrow-wight (a type of ghost) and Old Man Willow (an evil tree). Bombadil is one of the most loved supporting characters in Tolkien’s LOTR novels. He encountered Frodo Baggins in the first novel, “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Gandalf is one of his close friends in the book series. He even mentions his intention to pay a visit to Bombadil in “The Return of the King.”
Peter Jackson, however, considered Bombadil as non-important, which explains the reason behind Bombadil’s absence in his movies. Tom’s origins are unknown, and his powers are undefined. He seems completely unaffected by the One Ring, a scenario that makes him one of the most powerful beings in the LOTR franchise. Some believe he might be a Maia (angelic being), a primordial spirit of nature, or even Eru Ilúvatar (the one god) himself in disguise.
Tolkien has described Bombadil as “the spirit of the (vanishing) Oxford and Berkshire countryside.” One of the showrunners of The Rings of Power, J. D. Payne discussed the character’s inclusion in Season 2 in his recent interview with Variety. He also revealed why the character had not been adapted in prior adaptations. “There’s a reason why he hasn’t been in prior adaptations because in some ways he’s sort of an anti-dramatic character,” says Payne. “He’s not a character who has a particularly strong agenda. He observes drama, but largely doesn’t participate in it.”
Rory Kinnear will portray Tom Bombadil in The Rings of Power Season 2. The English actor is best known for playing Bill Tanner in Daniel Craig’s James Bond movies. Plus, he has starred in plenty of popular movies such as The Imitation Game (2014), Trespass Against Us (2016), iBoy (2017), Men (2022), the latest Henry Cavill starrer, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, in which he played Winston Churchill. The second season will premiere on Prime Video on August 29. Stay tuned for more updates.
