Gulzar is one of the finest directors of the Hindi film industry and he beautifully carried on the legacy of legendary filmmaker Bimal Roy. Gulzar was successful in creating a genre of his own and telling stories of the common man with uncompromised poetry and beauty.
‘Kitaab’ is one of the few films Gulzar directed and is one of a kind. The screenplay too is written by him and he gave the lyrics to the songs as well. ‘Kitaab’ tells the story of a young boy Babla who is sent away to live with his elder sister in the city. Everybody expects that it will help him in his studies. But Babla shows absolutely no interest in studying and gets scolded by everyone for that reason. He runs away from his new home to be with his mother. The story is heartwarming, superbly believable and wonderfully executed. You can watch the movie on Jio Cinema.
The movie is adapted from a Bengali story ‘Pathik’ by Samaresh Basu and it is similar to Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Fatik’ as well. Kitaab has Fahim Ajani in the role of Babla and actors like Uttam Kumar, Vidya Sinha and Dina Pathak in other important roles. If you know Uttam Kumar, you must feel it irresistible to watch him in a Hindi movie.
As all other Gulzar films, Kitaab has some wonderful songs and the music is given by R.D Burman. You should not miss this movie at any cost. Kitaab is available to watch for free on Jio Cinema.
