Winners of the 2023 edition of the prestigious Oscar Awards will be announced on 12th March 2023. On the Indian film industry’s front, ‘RRR’, ‘All That Breathes’, and ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ have been nominated for the ‘Best Original Song’, ‘Best Documentary’, and ‘Best Documentary Short’ categories, respectively.
Although these three Indian films are all strong contenders in their corresponding categories for the coveted Oscar trophy, we have a strong gut feeling that one amongst them holds the strongest chance to win an Oscar for India.
We are talking about Shaunak Sen’s globally acclaimed documentary feature film ‘All That Breathes’. And here is why we think so.
‘All That Breathes’ first made India proud after its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January 2022 where it bagged the Grand Jury prize. A few months later in May, it won another honour at the esteemed Cannes film festival where the film won the Golden Eye Award.
And not just that, ‘All That Breathes’ thereafter won multiple accolades at various international film fests including London Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival. Moreover, it was also named amongst the top five documentaries by the well-respected New York based non-profit organization – the National Board of Review.
Until now, wherever in the world ‘All That Breathes’ was showcased, it has unanimously impressed the audiences. This implies that the subject and its treatment is blessed with a unique, universal appeal. It currently holds 99% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
And this is the kind of film which deserves to win an Academy Award. But the million-dollar question is: Can it? We’ll know that on 12th March. Fingers crossed for not just ‘All That Breathes’ but also for the two other Indian films ‘RRR’ and ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ for Oscars 2023.
About the film
Set against the backdrop of Delhi, the documentary film ‘All That Breathes’ revolves around two brothers namely Saud and Nadeem whose childhood entailed watching the birds of prey, also known as the black kite, in the sky. Shaunak Sen’s film narrates how the two brothers have dedicated their lives to protect these birds which are now falling from the polluted skies.
