Looking for a good watch on a weekend evening? This critically acclaimed movie starring veteran director Prakash Jha will tug at your heartstrings, leaving you broken and whole at the same time.
We are talking about the Hindi film ‘Matto Ki Saikil’ now streaming on Prime Video. Translating to Matto’s cycle, the movie throws light on a lot of issues using the protagonist and his cycle as the medium. Despite all the frequent bothers his much-used cycle gets into, Matto’s and his cycle is a loyalty for the ages. That is, until something unrepairable happens. The latter is shown as a metaphor for the vicious circle of poverty that Jha’s Matto is trapped in.
The synopsis of the movie reads:” Matto is a daily wage construction labourer, responsible for the livelihood of his family which includes his wife and two young daughters. Every day, he takes a long-distance journey from his rural life to the city, riding his heavily worn-out bicycle to work. One day, his bicycle is damaged beyond repair in an accident, causing his work and his family to suffer. He manages to buy a new one with great effort. Will the new bicycle bring his life back on track, or will he and his family keep compromising on necessities and life’s simple pleasures?”
One of the best aspects of ‘Matto Ki Saikil’ is undoubtedly Prakash Jha’s performance as Matto. Getting the dialect right to basically living in the character’s skin, the ‘Rajneethi’ and ‘Satyagraha’ director is at the top of his game. Besides him, the movie also stars Anita Choudhary, Aarohi Sharma, Idhika Roy and Dimpy Mishra amongst others. Having had its world premiere at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival, the societal politics in ‘Matto Ki Saikil’ is as evident as in many of Jha’s directorials. Produced by Sudhirbhai Mishra, the movie is directed by M. Gani.
The movie is heart wrenching and deserves a watch for the honesty with which it shows the tribulations of the country’s poor. It’s a movie that is sure to make you feel throughout its run and introspect on a lot afterwards.
