‘Black Bird‘ is a crime drama on Apple TV Plus that is based on true events. It is an adaptation of James Keene’s autobiographical novel ‘In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption’. The series premiered on Apple TV Plus in July 2022.
‘Black Bird’ stars Taron Egerton as James Keene, a drug dealer who is convicted of his drug crimes and must serve 10 years in a minimum-security prison. Keene is offered his freedom in exchange for coaxing a confession out of suspected serial killer Larry Hall (played by Paul Walter Hauser) and finding out where his victims — all girls and women — are buried.
For that, James Keene must enter a maximum security jail, befriend the serial killer and sneakily obtain a confession from him. For James Keene, it’s a race against time as Hall’s appeal can go through any time, making him a free man.
The series builds up to a creepy edginess that is thrilling and suspenseful, as well as terrifying. The narrative never drops pace or grip throughout its six-episode runtime, keeping us glued to the screen, hanging at the edge of our seats. The performances of both Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser are exceptional and realistic. ‘Black Bird’ is easily one of the best shows of the year across all platforms. For this reason alone, the series deserves a watch.
‘Black Bird’ is developed by Dennis Lehane. Besides Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser, the series stars Greg Kinnear, Sepideh Moafi and Ray Liotta in crucial roles. ‘Black Bird’ is Ray Liotta’s final TV outing, a posthumous release following his death in late May.
