Some time back, we had apprised our readers that some recent Indian films like ‘RRR’, ‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’, and ‘Taanakkaran’ had made their way to the top 50 international films list on the Auckland-based movies-centric social platform Letterboxd.
And now, in yet another fantastic piece of update for Indian cinephiles, a Tamil language Indian movie has entered the coveted Letterboxd list comprising top 50 feature and documentary films released in the year 2022 from across the globe.
And the Indian film’s name is ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ (Rank 3), which has not just outranked its big-ticket Indian counterparts like ‘RRR’ (Rank 13) and ‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’ (Rank 47) but has also beaten many high profile Hollywood movies such as Tom Cruise’s highly anticipated film ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ (Rank 5), DC superhero movie ‘The Batman’ (Rank 6), and the critically acclaimed period adventure film ‘The Northman’ (Rank 12).
While the only two international films which are ahead of ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ on the Letterboxd list are Peter Jackson’s ‘The Beatles: Get Back – The Rooftop Concert’ (Rank 1) and the widely admired multiverse movie ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ (Rank 2).
‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’, which translates to ‘The Last Farmer’ in English, was released in Indian theatres on 11th February 2022 following which it started streaming on the SonyLIV OTT platform.
Helmed by M. Manikandan, the film’s plot revolves around an octogenarian man named Maayandi, who is the last active farmer in a remote village in Tamil Nadu. He is not willing to sell his land to property developers. But on one seemingly routine day, Maayandi is accused and imprisoned for killing three peacocks (National Bird of India) – an act which he did not commit. What happens next forms the rest of the film’s story. The movie also features Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu in supporting roles.
