Cinephiles across the globe are waiting with bated breath for the Oscar 2024 ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on 10th March 2024 in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Before the winners are announced on this date, the final nominees will be announced on 23rd January.
Everyone is talking about international blockbusters like ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ being strong contenders for Oscar wins in multiple categories. However, as far as Indian cinema is concerned, India’s official entry for the 96th Academy Awards is the critically acclaimed survival drama ‘2018’.
But there is one Indian film besides India’s official entry ‘2018’ which truly deserves at least an Oscar nomination. We are talking about a relatively small, low-budget yet brilliantly crafted film – ‘12th Fail’.
In case you are wondering how ‘12th Fail’ can be nominated for Oscars 2024, then let us tell you that films from different countries can be sent to the Academy as an independent nomination (Remember how ‘RRR’ was submitted for Oscar nominations in 14 categories despite ‘Chhello Show’ being India’s official entry).
A few weeks back, ‘12th Fail’ lead actor Vikrant Massey had revealed that the movie was sent as an independent nomination for the Oscar 2024 race. What we don’t know yet is exactly for which Oscar categories the makers have sent ‘12th Fail’. ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Director’, and ‘Best Actor’ categories are strong possibilities. And who knows, the film might turn out to be the biggest surprise in the history of Oscars!
Some time back, ‘12th Fail’ had cracked the coveted top rated Indian movies list on the reputed movies database portal IMDb. Currently, it holds a highly impressive Rank 25, so it’s ahead of so many Indian movies like ‘RRR’, ‘Baahubali’, ‘Lagaan’, and even India’s official Oscar entry – ‘2018’.
‘12th Fail’ received unanimously positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Based on Anurag Pathak’s best-selling book, the adeptly directed film narrates the incredible and inspirational story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma (brilliantly played by Vikrant Massey) and IRS officer Shraddha Joshi (Medha Shankar). The story is set amidst the backdrop of gruelling preparation by students who try to clear one of the world’s toughest exams: UPSC.
