It’s veteran Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam’s birthday today. He is still basking in the glory for his latest directorial venture – ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’, which was admired by many critics and fans across the country despite some issues. Most of the movie buffs must have already seen all the popular films directed by Mani Ratnam such as ‘Nayakan’, ‘Roja’, ‘Bombay’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Yuva’, and ‘Guru’, to name a few.
But even some of the diehard cinephiles might have missed one underrated hidden gem movie helmed by the maestro filmmaker Mani Ratnam. We are talking about the emotionally stirring film called ‘Anjali’, which came out in the year 1990. ‘Anjali’ is streaming on OTT on the Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, and Manorama Max streaming platforms.
The basic story of ‘Anjali’ is about a woman (played by Revathi), who learns that the supposedly stillborn child she gave birth to, is actually alive but mentally ill, she decides to bring the titular two-year-old girl home. How the family develops a unique bond with Anjali (played by Shamili), forms the rest of the film’s plot. The critically acclaimed yet often overlooked movie eventually won three National Film Awards. It’s one of the underappreciated gems directed by veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam.
