Nicole Kidman’s latest mystery drama miniseries, The Perfect Couple, is dominating Netflix’s viewership charts across the globe, including India. Serving as the official series adaptation of Elie Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel, the show follows a lavish wedding in Nantucket, which tragically ends before it even begins when a dead body washes up on the beach. As a result, all the attendees become the prime suspects in the murder. Led by Kidman, this Netflix miniseries also treasures talents like Liev Schreiber, Michael Beach, Dakota Fanning, Jack Reynor, Donna Lynne Champlin, Sam Nivola, and Ishaan Khatter.
From September 2 to September 8, ‘The Perfect Couple’ amassed over 103.5 million hours of viewing, and accumulated over 20.3 million views, securing its place at the top of Netflix’s Global Weekly Top 10 list of the most-watched TV shows. On Netflix India, this Jenna Lamia creation currently ranks second, falling behind the popular but controversial ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’. Season 1 of Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper is now in the third position, with Lilly Collins’ Emily in Paris Season 4 and Jeff Goldblum’s KAOS ranking fifth and sixth, respectively.
However, the critical reception towards the latest Nicole Kidman starrer has turned out highly divisive, with praise directed at the performances from Kidman, Schreiber, and Lynne Champlin. However, many have criticised the show for its tonal inconsistencies and borrowing too heavily from other murder mystery shows. On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a ‘rotten’ 59% critic score and a 59% audience score. Kidman’s new show isn’t the first poorly reviewed mystery miniseries to succeed on Netflix in 2024. Fool Me Once, the popular British thriller with low critic and audience scores became the eighth most-watched Netflix original series ever.
