It seems like the new Doctor Who series has found its new streaming platform. According to Bloomberg, Disney+ is looking to acquire the show’s rights from British Broadcast Corporation. Although, the OTT platform is yet to make an official announcement about this scenario. But it can emerge as a game-changing deal for Disney+ considering Doctor Who’s worldwide popularity.
The battle for luring more and more viewers among the streaming platforms is getting bigger with every passing day. And Disney+ needs to step up big time in this battle. Acquiring the global streaming rights of the new Doctor Who show will give the streaming platform a clear upper hand over its OTT competitors.
Ncuti Gatwa was announced as the new Doctor Who by the showrunners in May this year. The actor revealed his feelings after getting cast as Jodie Whittaker’s successor, “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.”
Gatawa is the first black actor to take on the iconic role. Bord in Rwanda, he is globally prominent for his role as Eric Effiong in Netflix’s Sex Education. We will also see him in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie. Whittaker was the first female to lead the Doctor Who series as the 13th Doctor.
