Despite all the criticism heaped on Netflix, one thing is clear as day. The streaming giant leaves no stone unturned in bringing the best content for its subscribers. The latest film that began streaming on Netflix this week is proof of just that. This Wednesday, Netflix premiered the much-talked-about Cannes 2022 psychological thriller and true crime drama, ‘The Stranger’ on its platform. And believe us when we tell you, it is a riveting watch.
Directed by Thomas M. Wright, ‘The Stranger’ premiered at Cannes 2022 in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section of the film festival. Based on a true story, ‘The Stranger’ is a gritty and suspenseful retelling of one of Australia’s most talked about missing persons cases – the disappearance of of 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe in 2003; and the massive police operation to nail the prime suspect, who managed to evade the law for eight long years.
In ‘The Stranger’, undercover cop Mark (Joel Edgerton) ingratiates himself into the life of Henry Teague (Sean Harris) under the garb of an illegal money-making opportunity, to extract a confession out of him for the disappearance and murder of a 13-year-old boy. Mark’s effort to gain Henry’s trust unfolds in a slow-burn style, leaving viewers on edge as the story progresses.
As Mark spends more time with Henry, the intensity of his efforts takes a heavy psychological toll on him. Both Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris give arresting performances in ‘The Stranger’ that keep viewers riveted. The story explores the frailties of the human psyche, with an affecting screenplay that digs into the deepest corners of the mind. The cinematography of the film is gorgeous, and enhances the edgy effect of the narrative manifold. In the end, is Mark able to get that confession out of Henry? And is he able to find the remains of the poor 13-year-old boy Henry murdered?
