According to the latest rumours, Marvel is planning to develop Thor 5. The studio has yet to officially green-light the project, a scenario that would make the film Chris Hemsworth’s fifth solo superhero project.
Hemsworth and the late Christopher Reeve are the only actors who have worked in four solo superhero projects. Thor 5 would help the former in breaking Reeve’s record. But do we need another solo God of Thunder flick?
We can all agree that Thor: Love and Thunder was anything but impressive. Fans had high expectations from it, considering how its predecessor, Thor: Ragnarok, turned out. Ragnarok established Taika Waititi as a director to be reckoned with in Hollywood. But Love and Thunder felt like a different film. The majority of fans believe that the New Zealand director relied too heavily on humour in the fourth Thor entry.
Fans believe that Thor 5 will need a different tone to succeed. However, Love and Thunder, despite all its flaws, felt like a proper send-off for Thor. Considering the path (Multiverse) the MCU is trying to explore these days, the addition of a fifth Thor instalment to the superhero franchise does not make any sense. In fact, Phase 4 could have survived without Love and Thunder as the latter did not add anything new or exciting to the overall Multiverse saga.
Thor is one of the last original Avengers, and his popularity is diminishing with every passing day. On top of this scenario, fans have become quite vocal on social media about the current state of the MCU. The ongoing Loki Season 2 and James Gunn’s GOTG Vol 3 have managed to impress the viewers from Phase 5 so far. On the other hand, Quantumania and Secret Invasion were just terrible. Furthermore, box office pundits are unsure about The Marvels’ financial performance due to its high budget and low hype, which resulted from fans losing interest in the MCU. If we consider all these scenarios, then Thor 5 (which will probably have a mammoth budget too) looks like a big gamble from Marvel Studios. It seems like the time has come for the studio to put God of Thunder’s stories to bed.
