Three Asian-American Led Animated Projects Make Their Way To Netflix

Netflix is increasing its animated library by the minute. With adapted stories, inspired stories and so many more, Netflix is on its way to set a benchmark in the animation sector too. Adding to this grand library, Netflix has bought in three more animated projects. Netflix’s latest triple animated project comes from asian American creators and all of them speak of amplifying asian culture in one way or the other.

These three animated feature films and series that will be released in 2023 include a film from Stephen Chow, titled “Monkey King”. Monkey King is based on the famous Chinese tale, which tells how a special monkey is not afraid of anything and fights Gods, Demons and dragons on its way. The movie is being produced by “Over the Moon’s” Peilin Chou and “How to Train Your Dragon 2’s Kendra Haaland producing. The movie will star the voice of Jimmy O. Yang, Bowen Yang, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Jo Koy, Ron Yuan, Hoon Lee, Stephanie Hsu, Andrew Pang, Andrew Kishino, Jodi Long, James Sie and BD Wong

Adding to the film, animated series “Boons and Curses” from Indian-American creator Jaydeep Hasrajani is also making its way to Netflix along with another animated series named “Mech Cadets”. Mech Cadets is based on the comic by Boom! Studios named “Mech Cadets Yu”.

“Boons and Curses” tells an ancient, comedic tale of a hero who fights evil with his partner Rani. The series is a hilarious take on various ancient South Asian stories that have been put together to create a story that can resonate with everyone in the world, besides Asians.

While Boons and Curses, tells an ancient tale, “Mech Cadets” jumps into the future that follows the after effects of a terrifying alien species attack. The story follows a young teenager who has always loved robots and dreamed about them. He and his classmates are always at war, but now they need to put aside all their differences to defend humanity and fight another alien invasion.

All of these stories come from Asian-American creators and Netflix for a long time has been supporting creators from various backgrounds, helping them to bring their stories forward. Netflix has also released campaigns and projects to bring in more Asian-American talent and made it their way of celebrating the AAPI month.

These three join Netflix’s slate of already amazing Asian animated movies and series that includes ‘Over the Moon’; ‘City of Ghosts’, “Wish Dragon” and others. They also have upcoming series and films like ‘Centaurworld’ from Megan Nicole Dong, ‘Oni’ from Daisuke, “Dice” Tsutsumi, ‘Ghee Happy’ from Sanjay Patel, ‘Witch Boy’ from Minkyu Lee and ‘Steps’ from Alyce Tzue.”

While these are from Asian American creators, Netflix already has a loaded library filled with original Asian Anime that comes straight out of Asia. Netflix now has successfully become a platform for creators from Asia as well for Asians all over the world.
