The 48th edition of the reputed Toronto International Film Festival 2023 (TIFF) has already kicked off (from 7th September) and will conclude on 17th September 2023 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. And in case you are wondering about any Indian films participating in the festival, you have come to the right place. Interestingly, TIFF 2023 will showcase the greatest number of Indian films since 2012. The following Indian movies will be a part of the ongoing 2023 edition of TIFF.
KILL (Segment: Midnight Madness)
Directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, the action-drama movie follows the story of a commando named Amrit (Lakshya), whose lover Tulika (Tanya Maniktala) is being coerced by her family for an arranged marriage. But when the train in which Tulika is travelling gets attacked by ruthless bandits, it’s up to Amrit and his fellow commando to save the train passengers from the violent attackers and save the girl.
Dear Jassi (Segment: Platform)
Directed by Tarsem Singh and set in the 1990s period, the film follows the story of a girl named Jassi, who falls for a likable rickshaw driver Mithu on a trip to Jagraon, Punjab. But their love story faces a setback because Jassi must go back to Canada with her mother.
Laapataa Ladies (Segment: Centrepiece)
Directed by Kiran Rao (Dhobi Ghat), the rural drama comedy-of-errors film tells the story of two brides named Jaya and Phool, who get mistakenly swapped during a train journey. While Jaya enters the joint family of Phool’s husband, Phool finds herself alone in a secluded railway station.
Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (Segment: TIFF Docs)
The documentary film directed by Anand Patwardhan focuses on the filmmakers’ own parents and how their family histories were connected with India’s independence movement and the memories which they have about Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and B.R Ambedkar, amongst other important figures.
Sthal (Segment: Discovery)
Directed by Jayant Digambar Somalkar, the Marathi film revolves around a woman named Savita, who must face difficult and uncomfortable questions from her suitors for an arranged marriage.
Thank You for Coming (Segment: Gala Presentations)
Helmed by Karan Boolani, the comedy movie follows the story of a Delhi-based food blogger Kanika (played by Bhumi Pednekar), who has never had an orgasm, until it happens one night. But the problem is that she can’t remember that person.
