Carole Baskin has been trying to wrangle her way out of the public eye in Netflix’s controversial documentary series ‘Tiger King’, ever since the series became a runaway hit on the streaming platform in 2020. But the founder of Big Cat Rescue has suffered a major setback in a case she filed on Monday against Netflix and Royal Goode Productions, producer of ‘Tiger King’. The presiding judge has refused to grant a temporary restraining order against ‘Tiger King 2’ as requested by Carole Baskin and her husband Howard Baskin.
Carole and Howard Baskin had filed a case in Tampa, Fla. against Netflix and producer Royal Royal Goode Productions for using footage of the couple in the sequel, against the terms of their contract with Royal Goode Productions. The couple has accused the production company of ‘Breach Of Contract’.
The lawsuit states that the Netflix and Royal Goode Productions violated their contract by using footage of the couple in ‘Tiger King 2‘, the second chapter of the hit documentary series, ‘Tiger King’. As per their lawsuit, the couple reiterate that they were made to believe that “any sequel — though odious — would not include any of their footage.”
As per the lawsuit, “The contract limited Royal Goode Productions’ right to use film footage of the Baskins to ‘a documentary motion picture.’ Throughout the contract, there is only reference to and mention of ‘the picture.’ No mention is made of granting Royal Goode Production sequel rights, rights to create derivative works from ‘the Picture’ or additional seasons or episodes.”
The lawsuit further reads, “By utilizing the film footage of the Baskins and Big Cat Rescue secured by Royal Goode Productions under the Appearance Releases in ‘sizzle reels’ and promotional trailers for the sequel entitled ‘Tiger King 2,’ the Defendants are in breach of the terms of the contract.”
The Florida judge, however, ruled that “While the Court understands the Baskins’ frustration, it does not appear that inclusion of Defendants’ footage of the Baskins will cause any immediate harm that cannot be compensated with monetary damages.” ruled Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington.
The judge also ruled that a temporary restraining order cannot be passed before the Defendants have had an opportunity to respond.
Carole Baskin has been in the eye of a storm ever since the debut season of ‘Tiger King’ insinuated that the Big Cat Rescue owner had a hand in the mysterious disappearance of her first husband,
missing for decades. ‘Tiger King’ also depicted that the Baskins’ organisation ‘Big Cat Rescue’ abused its animals by keeping them in very small cages.
The ‘Tiger King 2‘ trailer, released last week, again teased Carole Baskins’ role in her first husband’s disappearance, and promised a deeper dive into the case.
With Carole Baskin being denied relief in the case, things are bound to get heated up for her when ‘Tiger King 2’ premieres on Netflix on November 17.
