Twitter warriors took recourse to the hashtag trend to lend support to popular actor Suriya. Since morning, the hashtag #TNStandWithSuriya has been trending on Twitter, aided and abetted by the humongous fan base of the actor. Fans have come out in large numbers in support of Suriya.
Suriya had put out a touching post on Twitter on Sunday, condemning the holding of NEET exams, the nationwide entrance tests for aspiring medical students. The actor had been thoroughly moved by the death by suicide of four such Tamil Nadu medical aspirants, who had taken their lives out of fear of not clearing NEET. Touched by the plight of students, Suriya posted a statement on Twitter, where he shared the difficulties faced by students who couldn’t afford online education and expensive coaching classes, and the bias that NEET holds against poor students with medical aspirations. He also spoke against the need for holding NEET in the present Coronavirus circumstances, when even the court is delivering justice through video conferencing.
Irked by Suriya’s statement, and misconstruing it as degrading the Indian Judiciary, Justice SM Subramaniam wrote to Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, seeking contempt proceedings against Suriya. He said, “The Statement reveals that the Hon’ble Judges are afraid of their own life and rendering justice through video conferencing. While-so, they have no morale to pass orders directing the students to appear for NEET Exam without fear. The said statement in my considered opinion amounts to contempt of Court as the integrity and devotion of the Hon’ble Judges as well as the Judicial System of our Great Nation are not only undermined but criticised in a bad shape, wherein there is threat for the public confidence on the Judiciary. Thus, the cine actor Mr.Surya has committed contempt, warranting contempt proceedings to uphold the Majesty of our Indian Judicial System.”
No word is out yet whether Contempt of Court proceedings are being taken against Suriya. The actor is a staunch supporter of equal education opportunities for all. Recently, he donated ₹3.5 crore through his organisation ‘Agaram’, to be used for the education of children of film industry workers and corona warriors.
