The Oscar nominated documentary film, To Kill A Tiger, directed by Indo-Canadian Nisha Pahuja has confirmed that Netflix will be its OTT partner as it has acquired the rights. It had its theatrical release in September 2022, and even made a comeback to cinemas afterwards in some places after its initial screenings. This documentary initially premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Award, earning widespread recognition for focusing on the brutal journey and harsh reality of justice in rural India. It won the Best Documentary at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival. A highly noteworthy fact is that this movie is the only one of its kind to have been nominated for the Best Feature Documentary in the Academy Awards, without landing a distribution deal.
The roughly 2 hour film dives into the emotional quest of Ranjit, a farmer residing in Jharkhand. He is on the pursuit of truth and justice, which becomes an epitome of revolutionary change, following the brutal rape of his 13 year old daughter. The story takes a deep, and hard look into the realities of the justice system that is in place in rural areas, which brings about an unnerving feeling that transcends his personal tragedy as well.
Adding celebrities to the list of executives involved in the movie was an intentional move from Nisha Pahuja, as she claims that it would amplify the message she is conveying and make the impression last longer, and even bring about some kind of change at the very least. Mindy Kaling, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Dev Patel are some of the names associated with this impeccably portrayed documentary. It was slated for release on Netflix today, but will now be coming out on Sunday, March 10th 2024.
