Tollywood in Turmoil: Opportunity for Another OTT Wave

Telugu film industry is the most active industry in India after the Lockdown. Starting from January, the industry has seen new releases in troves. The industry is getting for a big bang this summer with one biggie lined up every week. It has started with Pawan Kalyan‘s Vakeel Saab but ended with the same movie. Following the COVID second wave conditions, the biggies have postponed and the small films like Ishq and Ek Mini Katha have occupied the slots. But then, things are not conducive even for those films now.

The Two Telugu states were impacted by the COVID Second Wave. Telangana Government has imposed a Night curfew in the state. The curfew will be enforced from 9 PM to 5 AM the next day. It will be effective from today till May 1st. All the theaters will have to be closed by 8 PM which means the evening shows which are crucial for the revenue of any film will be lost. Also, there will be negligible revenue from the morning and matinee shows in Summer.

On the other side, Andhra Pradesh has brought in a 50% occupancy rule. That should not be a problem for the small films but then, the local administrations have enforced evening Lockdowns in many places. As a result, the industry is also heading towards a closure like the last year. This should open more opportunities for the OTT players in the next few weeks.
