Tom Cruise – the man who saved cinema last year with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is pretty pissed these days. And we cannot blame the guy! The leading man and producer of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is not happy about the ongoing IMAX fiasco. His feature collaboration with director Christopher McQuarrie is set to hit the theatres worldwide on July 12 and has booked most of the IMAX screens in the United States. However, everything will change after the arrival of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
According to several reports, Cruise is frustrated about Oppenheimer getting all the IMAX screens in North America and other territories for three entire weeks after its release on July 21. It means Mission: Impossible 7 will stay in IMAX theatres for only nine days.
IMAX theatres are considered the premium ones as they contribute significantly to the financial success of features. For example, Top Gun: Maverick collected over $110 million from the US IMAX theatres. This is why Cruise is baffled over the ongoing IMAX drama with Oppenheimer. He wants his forthcoming action extravaganza to emerge successful at the global box office, given the film’s mammoth-sized budget of nearly $290 million.
Christopher Nolan has played a significant role in popularising the IMAX format in Hollywood. He filmed Oppenheimer completely with the IMAX large-format cameras. His exceptional work with the IMAX format has inspired many filmmakers to include IMAX shots in their projects.
One of the latest reports from Puck News reveals that Universal booked all IMAX theatres first compared to Paramount, securing an extensive IMAX release window for Oppenheimer. It means Mission 7 has only nine days to collect as much money as it can through the IMAX release. This scenario may adversely impact the film’s overall financial performance.
The number of IMAX theatres has augmented significantly in the last few years, representing nearly a third of the large-format screens in the United States. This is why Cruise is frustrated about this entire scenario and putting all his effort to secure as many non-IMAX theatres as he can before Mission 7’s release. Stayt tuned for more updates.
