A few hours back, it was reported that Amazon Studios has greenlit a small screen adaptation based on the longstanding and immensely popular video game series ‘Tomb Raider’. Talented actress-writer Phoebe Waller Bridge of ‘Fleabag’ fame, who is a big fan of the game, has been roped in to write the television series. And now, it has been revealed (via THR) that besides the TV series, a movie, and minimum one Tomb Raider game is also in the works.
However, Phoebe Waller Bridge is not yet confirmed to be involved with the movie adaptation. And whether the three times Emmy winner would also star in the series is also not confirmed as of now.
An interesting thing about the aforementioned ‘Tomb Raider’ adaptations is that the television series, the movie and the game will all be connected to each other in some way. Apparently akin to what Marvel Studios has done with its popular superhero franchise – the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
And this is obviously not the first time the ‘Tomb Raider’ game series is being adapted to the screen. Because previously, Angelina Jolie had starred in two feature film adaptations namely ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ in 2001, followed by its sequel ‘The Cradle of Life’ in 2003. Despite their financial success, both these films were not received well by the critics at that time.
Then, in the year 2018, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander played the lead role in a reboot film simply titled ‘Tomb Raider’. Unlike the first two films, this third installment was comparatively received in a better way by the audiences and critics, but it still couldn’t recover its costs. A sequel too was initially in the works, but it didn’t move forward because the movie rights (from MGM) went back to the game company.
