The Indian cinema industry is one of the biggest in the world, and that is not for no reason at all! Time and time again, Indian films climb up the ladder of the international box office and proclaim their territory. Be it Bollywood, Tollywood, Kollywood, or Mollywood, no branch of the Indian cinema lags behind.
Reiterating the same, two Indian films debuted in the Top 10 of the box office, for the first time in the last three months. Debuting at Number 8 was Mallik Ram’s ‘Tillu Square’. A rom-com drama that rocked 450 theaters for a gross collection of $1.83 million and is the sequel to the 2022 film DJ Tillu.
Immediately following that at Number 9 was ‘Crew’, a Hindi film that opened to an estimated $1.49 million at about 485 theaters. A comic endeavor, the movie follows a group of air hostesses from Mumbai who have set out on a journey to pursue their dreams.
Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time it is happening. What is surprising, however, is the fact that a Tamil film not only surpassed a Bollywood movie but also multiple Hollywood titles. While South Indian titles do well at the global box office every now and then, it is only remarkable titles like the Baahubali duo, RRR, KGF: Chapter 2, and 2.0 that surpass all bounds.
That being said, it is undeniable that ‘Tillu Square’ is off to a great start. Watch this space to further map the trajectories of such well-to-do films!
