The eagerly anticipated 74th Primetime Emmy Awards were recently announced, and the best of the best television titles were honoured with the coveted trophy. Emmys is one of the four major American awards, the other three being Oscars (for films), Grammys (for music), and Tony (for stage theatre). So, winning the best ‘Drama Series’ or the ‘Best Comedy Series’ award is a big deal.
The first Emmys were awarded way back in 1949, so it’s been a long journey since then. Based on an Israeli show ‘Prisoners of War’, ‘Homeland’ follows a workaholic CIA agent Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes), who believes that a recently ‘released’ prisoner of war – marine sergeant Nicholas Brody (played by Damian Lewis) is planning to carry out a deadly attack against his own country. Events unfold at relentless speed in this one-of-its-kind terrorism-based TV Show.
Breaking Bad (Streaming on Netflix)
The show follows the life of an under-achieving chemistry genius Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston). After he is informed about his cancer diagnosis, he decides to use his knowledge to manufacture the world’s highest quality crystal meth, along with his former pupil Jesse Pinkman (played by Aaron Paul) – in order to secure his family’s future.
Game of Thrones (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
Based on George R. R. Martin’s bestselling book series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, the cult medieval fantasy series revolves around the struggles of several powerful noble families in the fictional continent of Westeros. Their common motive is fighting for the control of the Seven Kingdoms and to claim the coveted Iron Throne amidst conspiracies and violent conflicts.
Ted Lasso (Streaming on Apple TV+)
The sports comedy drama series follows the titular character Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), an optimistic American college football coach who is surprisingly recruited to manage an English soccer team.
Succession (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
The show’s plot revolves around the Roy family, who are owners of the media and entertainment giant RoyCo. When the company’s founder (Brian Cox) decides to step down owing to his deteriorating health, his four children gear up to compete for control of their father’s company.
Modern Family (Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar)
The popular sitcom revolves around three disparate families living in Los Angeles who are related to each other through the families’ patriarch Jay Pritchett (played by Ed O’Neill) and how they navigate through their cultural and generational gaps.
The Crown (Streaming on Netflix)
The big-budget historical drama television series revolves around the royal family and chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth-II from the year of her wedding until the modern times. The show touches upon several events including the Suez crisis, Prince Edward’s birth, the tenures of various Prime Ministers, and Prince Charles’s marriage to Princess Diana, etc.
