Top 5 Recent Bollywood Movies That Were Screened at Cannes Film Festival

In an earlier article, we had apprised you about the three Indian films that were going to be a part of the ongoing 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival 2021. Those Indian films were ‘Invisible Demons’, ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing’, and ‘Eka’.

Since the last decade or so, many Bollywood films were screened at the prestigious film festival and some of them were warmly embraced by the festival audience. We have compiled a list of five well-made recent Hindi movies that were screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Udaan

The film was Vikramaditya Motwane’s feature film directorial debut. It was screened under the Un Certain Regard category of the Cannes Festival and received a standing ovation, which is no small feat considering the refined and hard-to-please festival audience.

The film was written by Motwane alongside Anurag Kashyap. It’s an endearing story of a teenaged boy who unwillingly has to live with his alcoholic and dictatorial father in Jamshedpur after his return from a boarding school in Shimla. He develops a special bond with his six-year-old half-brother.

The first part of the violent entertainer from maverick filmmaker Anurag Kashyap received rousing applause at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight section. The story revolved around a fierce rivalry between a gangster and a coal mining kingpin. The film boasted an ensemble cast including stellar actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Rajkumar Yadav, Jaideep Ahlawat, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Richa Chaddha, and Huma Qureshi amongst others.

The Lunchbox

The LunchboxRitesh Batra’s feel-good, heart-warming drama was screened at the Cannes International Critics’ Week and won the Critics Week Viewers Choice Award. The film revolves around a unique romance that develops between a widowed accountant (Irrfan Khan) and a neglected housemaker (Nimrat Kaur) as a result of a mistaken lunchbox delivery. The film also featured Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Baahubali

BaahubaliDynamic filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli’s epic action-drama Baahubali films were screened at the 70th edition at Marché Du Film venue of the Cannes film festival after their blockbuster success. It was the same year when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Sonam Kapoor made a glamourous appearance at the festival.

Masaan

Masaan

Proficient filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s intense and hard-hitting drama had won two awards namely FIPRESCI, International Jury of Film Critics prize, and Promising Future prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes film fest. Masaan received a standing ovation at the festival. The film narrated four intersecting stories that were set amidst the backdrop of the holy city of Varanasi.
