The last week was eventful, to say the least when it came to new and buzzy titles releasing on Indian OTT platforms. Right from Marvel’s animated series ‘What If…?’ opening episode, to Malayalam thriller ‘Kuruthi’, to Sundance darling ‘CODA’, to the much-awaited war dramas ‘Shershaah’ and ‘Bhuj: The Pride of India’. Besides, last week also saw releases of John David Washington’s ‘Beckett’, ‘Netrikkan’, ‘Godzilla vs Kong’, and ‘Modern Love S2’. The list is long.
Moving on to the top titles slated to release on various Indian OTT platforms this week, we have collated a list of top OTT releases that you can look forward to watching in the coming week.
Home (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video from August 19)
The year 2021 has been terrific so far for the Malayalam film industry. The OTT space has been blessed with Malayalam titles such as Nayattu, The Great Indian Kitchen, Malik, and Joji, to name a few.
So, the curiosity factor is only natural when a Malayalam title is due for release and the Amazon original movie ‘Home’ should be no exception. Helmed by Rojin Thomas, the film’s trailer suggested that it’s a slice-of-life family drama set amidst the backdrop of pandemic induced work-from-home culture.
200 Halla Ho (Streaming on Zee5 from August 20)
The film is ostensibly a hard-hitting drama inspired by true events. The film’s trailer and the synopsis gave us an idea that the story is about 200 women who rise against years of inequality and when 40 FIRs were filed in a single day. The film also features veteran actor Amol Palekar in an important role and is directed by Sarthak Dasgupta.
Cartel (Streaming on MX Player & ALTBalaji from August 20)
The web series revolves around five Mumbai based crime lords who have been working without any rivalries and friction owing to a treaty instituted by Rani Mai (Supriya Pathak) many years ago. However, a turn of events might disrupt the peace between these gangs. The trailer of the show and its ensemble cast had piqued the curiosity amongst OTT audiences.
Comedy Premium League (Streaming on Netflix from August 20)
The Netflix show would feature sixteen comedians who would be divided into four different teams, and they would compete in a battle of wits to become comedy champions. The show would also feature Anurag Kashyap in a special appearance. In these distressing times, we need more entertaining shows like this.
Dr. Death (Streaming on Lionsgate Play from August 20)
Based on Wondery’s gruesome podcast of the same name, ‘Dr. Death’ follows the appalling true story of an extreme case of medical malpractice. The series apparently delves into the twisted mind of a charismatic and ostensibly brilliant Texas neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duntsch. Trouble ensues when the patients operated upon by him are left either permanently maimed or dead. Consequently, two fellow surgeons with the Dallas prosecutor make it their mission to stop Dr. Death.
Nine Perfect Strangers (Streaming on Amazon Prime Video from August 20)
Based on the 2018 bestselling novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, the series revolves around nine stressed city-based strangers and their ten-day retreat at a wellness resort managed by its director Masha (Nicole Kidman). These strangers have no idea what’s in store for them.
Sweet Girl (Streaming on Netflix from August 20)
This action thriller features ‘Aquaman’ star Jason Momoa as a husband who ostensibly makes it his mission to bring justice to those responsible for his wife’s death. While doing that, he must protect his only family left – his daughter. It would be interesting to see Jason Momoa in yet another action-packed role.
