It’s the end of the first half of 2022 and it’s definitely been an exciting year so far for Indian OTT viewers. For this article, we have compiled a list of the top Amazon original Indian films and series which were released on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform from the months of January to June 2022.
Panchayat Season-2
The web series follows an engineering graduate Abhishek Tripathi (played by IIT Kharagpur alumni turned actor Jitendra Kumar), who reluctantly accepts the post of Secretary of a panchayat office in a remote village of Uttar Pradesh. Each episode of the show is a slice-of-life comedy-drama that gives you the feel of a typical easy-going village-day.
It also features veteran actors Raghuveer Yadav (in the role of Pradhan-Pati) and Neena Gupta (in the role of an inactive village Pradhan), and Chandan Roy as the good-hearted assistant, amongst others. The second season further portrays Jitendra Kumar’s character arc and his evolving relationship with the show’s main characters.
Guilty Minds
It’s a legal drama series helmed by Shefali Bhushan and features Shriya Pilgaonkar and Varun Mitra in the lead roles. They essay the characters of two young and ambitious lawyers who find themselves on the opposite ends of the ethical spectrum while fighting their cases. The series also stars Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Satish Kaushik, Benjamin Gilani, Karishma Tanna, Shakti Kapoor, and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, amongst others.
Modern Love Mumbai
Inspired by the popular New York Times column, the Mumbai chapter of the ‘Modern Love’ series showcases six heart-warming stories based on various love forms such as romantic, self-love, parental, marital, etc. The short segments are ‘Raat Rani’ (by Shonali Bose), ‘Baai’ (by Hansal Mehta), ‘Mumbai Dragon’ (Vishal Bhardwaj), ‘My Beautiful Wrinkles’ (by Alankrita Shrivastava), ‘I Love Thane’ (by Dhruv Sehgal), and ‘Cutting Chai’ (by Nupur Asthana).
The series features an ensemble cast that includes Fatima Sana Shaikh, Chitrangada Singh, Arshad Warsi, Pratik Gandhi, Ritwik Bhowmik, Meiyang Chang, Naseeruddin Shah, Tanuja, Sarika, and Prateik Babbar, amongst others.
Suzhal: The Vortex
Set amidst the backdrop of the grave looting festival Mayanakollia, the investigative thriller series revolves around a missing young girl in a small place in Tamil Nadu. The show features parallel plotlines of that of a woman hellbent on finding her sister, investigation by cops, and a father who is desperately trying to find his daughter. It features Aishwarya Rajesh, Kathir, R Parthipan and Sriya Reddy, amongst others.
Putham Pudhu Kaalai Vidiyaadhaa
It’s a follow-up to the 2020 Tamil anthology titled ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’ and narrates five short heart-warming stories based on the themes of love, humanity, and hope. These five shorts have been directed by Balaji Mohan, Halitha Shameem, Madhumita, Richard Anthony, and Surya Krishnan and each story is set amidst the backdrop of the pandemic and its effects.
Gehraiyaan
The film is a take on contemporary relationships and revolves around an ambitious woman named Alisha Khanna (played by Deepika Padukone) who is dealing with her personal and professional dilemmas. At this delicate juncture of her life, she falls for her cousin Tia’s (Ananya Panday) fiancé Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi).
Jalsa
Helmed by Suresh Triveni, the film is an investigative thriller whose plotline revolves around a hit and run case where the victim is an 18-year-old girl. The goings-on are narrated from the point of view of an outstanding journalist Maya Menon (played by Vidya Balan) and a distressed mother Ruksana (Shefali Shah), who is also Maya’s domestic helper. The film’s crux is the complex relationship between the two protagonists following an unfortunate incident which directly connects the two.
Sharmaji Namkeen
The movie is a family entertainer starring Late actor Rishi Kapoor (his last on-screen outing) and Paresh Rawal essaying the same titular role as B.G. Sharma aka Sharmaji. The film’s plot revolves around the West-Delhi-based middle-class, 58-year-old widower and how he discovers his hidden passion for cooking as he tries to cope with his post-retirement life. It also features Rishi Kapoor’s former co-star Juhi Chawla.
Saani Kaayidham
Helmed by Arun Matheswaran, ‘Saani Kaayidham’ is a hard-hitting rural revenge drama that is set in the 1980s period. The film features veteran filmmaker turned actor Selvaraghavan and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles of an ordinary man named Sangaiyya and his police constable half-sister Ponni, respectively. How they exact brutal revenge from those who had destroyed their family forms the film’s underlying plotline.
