The 1984 Dune has nothing on the latest edition, that can be understood from the trailer alone. While the screenplay of the first version of the film was a semi-disaster (which is being kind), the trailer of the 2020 reboot looks crisp and quite brilliant (I am being ‘unkind’ here).
The trailer starts off with Timothee Chalamet’s character Paul Astreides stuck in a dream. He has started getting prophetic dreams just like his mother. He keeps seeing Zendaya’s Chani in his dreams and foresees an invasion coming to end his house, Astreides. He is tested by a group of ‘witches’ to see the extent of his powers; they provide him guidance to eventually take over from his father, when he is ready. He is later trained by Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck and Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho before setting off to the planet Arrakis with his father, mother and attendants.
The 3 minute long trailer is filled with fantastical shots of a desert planet with Jason Mamoa’s and Timothee Chalamet’s characters standing out more than the others. Duncan Idaho is especially impressive in a quick fight sequence shown in the trailer. Eventually we find out that Paul’s family is being picked off one by one and his father has fallen. He is now the head of his house and has to lead his people to greatness. The final epic shot of the infamous sandworm(s) completes the trailer.
Zendaya is shown in little moments but lights up every scene she is in. Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson looks regal, in the short montages they are shown. Javier Bardem looks brilliant as Stilgar in his Freeman sand-suit. Dave Bautista deserves a special mention as well. He appears on the screen twice and both times he is extremely menacing as Glossu Raban. The film will also feature Stellan Skarsgaard, Chang Chen, David Dastmalchian, Sharon Duncan Brewster and Charlotte Rampling in prominent roles, some of who are even featured in the trailer.
The film is a coming of age story in a sci-fi space war epic. A young man facing insurmountable odds, having to face enemies from all directions, has to conquer his fear before he can deal with those who threaten his family.
Dune is set to be the first part of a two-part adaptation of the original 1965 novel which will be theatrically released. No release date has been given, but it expected to come out later next year.
