Trailer Talk: Melissa McCarthy’s ‘Superintelligence’ Is A Quirky End-Of-The-World Story

Trailer Talk: Melissa McCarthy’s ‘Superintelligence’ Is A Quirky End-Of-The-World Story

Melissa McCarthy is back in this unique new romantic comedy where she encounters a James Corden voiced Artificial Intelligence (AI). But like most films which have been releasing post 2015, the world will end until the main protagonist (McCarthy) does something about it. The trailer was released on multiple popular YouTube channels to a quiet reception.

The trailer starts with a few ominous lines “Technology. It’s always watching us. Studying our every move. And it just focused it’s attention… on Carol Peters”. We then get a shot of Carol (portrayed by McCarthy) and her best friend Dennis (portrayed by Brian Tyree Henry) looking at a screen confused. We immediately hear the sound of James Corden coming from a blue spherical like matrix on a computer screen.

Initially Carol and Dennis think this is a prank being done by a troll and they ignore this “entity”. But later at Carol’s home, the voice explains to her that it is a technological “Superintelligence”. It controls every electronic appliance Carol owns as proof of it’s existence as well as shows it’s control over the U.S. currency. The AI also explains that it chose James Corden’s voice to speak to Carol because it would keep her calm.

The AI explains that it is planning to spend the next three days with Carol, who was the most average person on the planet, it could find. Federal agents as well as her colleagues are confused by this development. We are then entertained by a few montages of classic McCarthy jokes as well as physical comedy. She eventually finds out that depending on how these three days go, the AI will decide to blow up humanity. After making up with her ex, she decides to show the Superintelligence that humanity is worth preserving.

This film will be Melissa McCarthy’s fourth collaboration with her husband, Ben Falcone, who will direct this feature as well co-produce it with his wife. He has previously directed her in “Tammy” (2014), “The Boss” (2016), and “Life of the Party” (2018), all of which the couple co-wrote together. The screenwriter for this feature will be Steve Mallory. The upcoming HBOMax film will star Melissa McCarthy, James Corden, Bobby Cannavale, Brian Tyree Henry, Jean Smart, Sam Richardson, Ben Falcone, Sarah Baker, Karan Soni, Jessica St. Clair, Usman Ally, Michael Beach, Damon Jones, Richie Merritt and Dipti Mehta in prominent roles.

Unfortunately HBOMax doesn’t stream here in India, but we do get HBO shows on Netflix and Disney+Hotstar. This film is set to premiere on November 26th 2020, so hopefully the film will be distributed internationally on other OTT platforms (hopefully) within a month.
