“Queen of on-screen butt-kicking” Milla Jovovich returns with her husband Paul W. S. Anderson in their latest action game adaptation ‘Monster Hunter’. ‘Monster Hunter’ started out as a game, which was released back in 2004, and it spawned a gaming franchise which sold over 64 million units worldwide. This makes it Capcom’s second best-selling series after the phenomenon ‘Resident Evil’.
To those of you who don’t know, ‘Resident Evil’ is another film franchise which stars Jovovich and is also directed by her spouse Anderson. With the ‘Resident Evil’ series having brought in over 1.2 billion dollars in revenue, we are expecting another hit film series from the action movie duo.
The trailer starts off with Lt. Artemis (portrayed by Jovovich) and her squad going to a location as a response to the distress call they received from another squad, who seems to have vanished. On the way to the location, Artemis’ team notes some odd markers on the roads to where the missing team’s trail leads. They stop where the tracks end; their vehicle supposedly vanished out of thin air.
A few seconds later, Artemis’ team is forced to flee due to a heavy sandstorm heading in their direction. They get a head start but within minutes they are caught by the storm, which is not any other “ordinary” sandstorm. Lightning and Thunder, along with spiralling winds hit the markers (they had previously noticed around them), “activating them”, sending them through a portal to another world.
We get a quick montage of a man who has been stuck on this new world (Tony Jaa) and a huge monster coming out of the desert to attack Artemis’ team. They eventually learn that the portal can be opened from both sides and the only way to go back home would be to beat the monsters at the entrance and then activate it, so as to prevent the monsters from reaching our home world.
Most of the story is generic and the plot has been mostly explained in the trailer. But Milla Jovovich has returned and found an excuse to kick the asses of monsters on screen again and we are not going to complain. And with Tony Jaa in the film, we can expect some crazy martial arts stunts as well. The trailer eventually ends with Jovovich going one-on-one against a “heavily-scaled dragon monster”, with her wielding the famous dual-blades (from the game series) and we can’t wait to see what happens next.
Sony Pictures is releasing ‘Monster Hunter’ worldwide in theaters on December 30th, 2020. Watch the trailer for this monster slayer flick down below:
