Trailer Talk: Netflix Original Film Guilty, a Rape vs. Consensual Sex Drama, Has Kiara Advani Showing off Her Swag Like Never Before

By Rashmi Paharia - Feb 18, 2020 @ 03:02 pm

Trailer Talk: Netflix Original Film Guilty, a Rape vs. Consensual Sex Drama, Has Kiara Advani Showing off Her Swag Like Never BeforeNetflix has just revealed the first official trailer of its upcoming Hindi Original film ‘Guilty’, and the trailer reveals a lot about what the premise of the movie is all about. It is a suspense drama that delves deep into the concept of what constitutes consensual sex between two people and what kind of sex falls into the domain of forced sex, aka rape.

The movie opens with a young brattish girl called Nanki (Kiara Advani) narrating the events of a stormy night that turned her cozy, privileged world at her school, St Martins, upside down.

Nanki is a go-getter who runs her very popular school band along with her ‘tribe’ – three guys called VJ, Hardy and Tashi. VJ also happens to be her boyfriend. Trouble brews when a not-so-privileged small-town girl Tanu (Anushka Ranjan) enters school.

The girl is a rabble-rouser, who openly flirts with VJ, is constantly touchy-feely with him — but when VJ gives into Tanu’s blatantly provocative behavior and takes things into the bedroom, she cries ‘rape’.

Not only does she accuse him of the heinous crime, she also raises a hue and cry, rallying other students behind her with her speeches about privileged guys forcing themselves on not-so-fortunate girls. Was it really rape, as Tanu alleges; or was it sex between two willing partners?

Nanki jumps into the melee, defending her boyfriend with all her might, and trying to get to the bottom of the truth. Both sides hire lawyers – played by Nikki Walia and Dalip Tahil. But it soon becomes obvious that there’s more to the matter than what meets the eye. One of the three – Tanu, VJ and Nanki – is lying and has something to hide. But what? That forms the crux of the latter half of the movie.

Kiara Advani stands out in the trailer as the fiery and feisty Nanki. There’s nothing of the shy Preeti from Kabir Singh or the loud Monika of Good Newwz in her personality as Nanki. She’s all guts and gumption here.

The trailer zips by at full speed, and hints at a similarly fast-paced movie. There’s nothing shy or staid about it – it’s bold and in your face. Atika Chohan and Kanika Dhillon have written the movie, while Ruchi Narain has directed it. Karan Johar’s digital productions company, Dharmatic Entertainment is the producer of Guilty.

Guilty arrives on Netflix on 6th March. In the meanwhile, here’s the trailer –
