Netflix just released the much anticipated trailer of Enola Holmes and one thing sticks out quite firmly – there is a lot of fourth wall breaking by the titular character. Enola portrayed by Millie Bobbie Brown, starts off the trailer on a bicycle, looking into the camera and asking us a rhetorical question, ‘Now, where to begin?’. She then proceeds give us the basic plot of the movie.
Enola, when written in reverse spells Alone, says Millie Bobbie Brown’s character in the trailer. But she was never alone as she grew up with her very eccentric mother Eudoria Holmes, portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter. Their quirky yet loving relationship is established over a quick montage. One day Enola wakes to find that her mother has gone missing.
On hearing about their mother’s disappearance from Enola, her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, portrayed by Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin respectively, rush back home to find out what happened. But to their dismay, instead of finding a ‘lady of stature’, they find that Enola is just as ‘wild as their mother’. So Mycroft decides to send her to a finishing school for ladies first, to make her ‘acceptable for society’, before the brothers set off to search for their mother.
But Enola remembers what her mother once told her. She told Enola that there are always two paths she can take. The one she set for herself, or the one others set for her. This piece of advice is sure to resonate with anyone who hears it, as it reminds us of the freedom everyone has over their own life. Enola rebels and leaves the finshing school to find her mother. After she escapes, we hear her speak an iconic line to us, which is known by any Sherlock Holmes fan, ‘The Game Is Afoot’.
She eventually winds up in London during her search, while her brothers closely follow her trail; trying to find her and send her back. She decides to disguise herself as a ‘lady’ to stop people from recognizing her from her missing poster. She later meets a young Viscount, Viscount Tewkesbury on a train during her investigation. She finds out some bad men are after him and sets out to help him as well
The trailer looks splendid with a very catchy score that keeps us stuck to our seats. The movie also stars Fiona Shaw, Adeel Akhtar, Frances de la Tour, Louis Partridge, Susie Wokoma and Burn Gorman in prominent roles. The screenplay is adapted by Jack Thorne which is based off the mystery novel series ‘The Enola Holmes Mysteries’ written by Nancy Springer. Harry Bradbeer helms this latest Netflix project.
Enola Holmes will premier on Netflix on September 23rd. Watch the Enola Holmes trailer down below.
