Netflix dropped the first official trailer for its hotly anticipated Original film Extraction. The movie is a mouth-watering proposition for very precise reasons – it has the Russo Brothers, directors of the Avengers Franchise, as producers, and longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe stunts director Sam Hargrave as director.
As if that isn’t alluring enough, Extraction features hunky Chris ‘Thor’ Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a hardened mercenary for hire, who’s recruited to pull off his most dangerous mission yet. In an extraction operation that pits him against the biggest ganglord of India, and ruthless international weapons and drugs dealers, he must rescue Ovi (Rudraksh Jaiswal), the kidnapped son of the biggest ganglord of Bangladesh.
The trailer begins with an incendiary scene – Tyler Rake jumps off a huge, rugged cliff, into the placid waters below. The next scene shows him sitting underwater in the Lotus pose of Yoga, pondering over the dangerous life he leads and its perilous connotations – a mercenary never knows which bullet may well find its mark.
The scene shifts to chaotic South East Asia and its squalid surroundings, where he engages in an entertaining hand combat with goons. Golshifteh Farahani makes an appearance as the person who puts him on the chase. Pankaj Tripathi and Priyanshu Painyuli look menacing as the two bickering drug lords.
The trailer brims with explosive action scenes, leading up to Rake rescuing Ovi, after which the two form an unlikely team to get the hell out of the danger they’re in. They also forge a tender bond in the time they’re together. So when the danger escalates, and Rake is advised by his confidante (David Harbour) that the only way he can get out alive is by aborting the mission and leaving the boy behind, it is obviously not a choice for him.
Chris Hemsworth is brilliant in the sequences, in a never-seen-before avatar. Not even his Thor outings leave such an impression of gravitas as his Tyler Rake. At one point, Ovi asks him, “Are you always this brave”, and you can see he’s visibly moved. Action scenes apart, Hemsworth excels in the tender parts too.
The action scenes are everything we’d expect from the stellar crew. The car chases, the shoot-outs, the hand-to-hand combats, and the treatment are all top notch.
The one actor we don’t get to see in this trailer is Randeep Hooda. Is it deliberate, and there’s another trailer on the way? Or is Hooda’s role so inconsequential to the narrative to not even deserve a glimpse? Only time will tell. And of course, the premiere of the movie, which happens on 24th April on Netflix.
In the meantime, here’s the trailer for you to watch –
