Indian cinema celebrated a remarkable triumph at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, as two outstanding films and three awards from the country bagged prestigious awards. The festival, held in Park City, Utah, honoured the talents behind “Girls Will Be Girls” and “Nocturnes”.
“Girls Will Be Girls,” directed by Shuchi Talati, emerged as a double winner. It bagged the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic category and the Special Jury Award for Acting for Preeti Panigrahi. The film talks about the story of Mira, a sixteen-year-old going through the complexities of adolescence within the confines of a strict Himalayan boarding school, while also exploring her strained relationship with her mother, Anila, portrayed by Kani Kusruti. It is produced by the duo of Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal which makes it more interesting.
“Nocturnes,” made by Anirban Dutta and Anupama Srinivasan, won a big award at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s about hawk moths, and it follows a scientist and a person from the Himalayas as they study and film these interesting creatures for many months.
Importantly, Indian documentaries have been winning awards at Sundance for several years in a row. This shows that Indian filmmakers are doing great work and bringing new ideas to the world of documentaries. “Nocturnes” joins other Indian winners like “Writing with Fire,” “All That Breathes,” and “Against The Tide.”
This triple win for India is phenomenal news as it will definitely encourage Indian filmmakers to make more of such artistic films. Congratulations to all the winners, hope to see more Indian films next year.
