Muthiah Muralidaran issued a statement asking Vijay Sethupathi to ‘step away’ from his biopic ‘800’. The statement was made by the legendary cricketer so as to avoid any further problems for Vijay in his acting career in the future.
Vijay Sethupathi had received backlash from members of the Tamil community for taking up the biopic film of Muralidaran due to the statement made by the latter on the war between Sri Lankan forces and LTTE. The cricketer’s statement on this issue had been perceived as being supportive of the fact that thousands of innocent people had lost their lives due to the war.
Muralidaran in the recent statement that he issued from Dubai, where he is present as the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2020, said that he “doesn’t want to be reason to derail the career of a great artist like Vijay Sethupathi.” He further added, “He should not suffer any unnecessary obstacles in his career as an artist in future. Therefore, I request him to move away.”
Talking about the biopic ‘800’, Muralidaran said, “I consented for my biopic to be made because it would provide inspiration and confidence to future generations and young cricketers. But there have been many obstacles. I hope that this film would be made despite these obstacles. I have been given assurances by the production house that they would make an announcement soon and I will stand by them for all their efforts.”
Muralidaran also said in his letter that he had to face many obstacles in his career but he never got tired of it and always fought against all odds to reach where he is now. Clarifying his earlier statement on the civil war he said that he was misunderstood about it and said that, “I did not support the killings of innocent people and I would not do it.”
To all this Vijay Sethupathi replied, “Nandri, Vanakkam” that means “Thank you and Goodbye”, suggesting that the actor is backing out of the project on the cricketer’s request. Controversies are not new to the entertainment industry but something like this happening is quite a rare sight.
