Netflix’s animation unit is set to undergo a significant restructure, a move that will result in job cuts and the shutdown of two films currently in pre-production. This shakeup comes as Netflix aims to recruit outside producers to maintain the consistent flow of animated content on its platform.
The specifics of the impending layoffs are still not immediately clear, but it is expected that they will be handed down in the coming weeks.
To diversify Netflix’s content offerings, the division is exploring output deal offers to bring in third-party producers and their animated works to the platform, although the specific companies or producers being courted are yet to be disclosed.
This restructuring has already had an impact on two slate projects. The first, “Escape From Beverly Hills,” previously unannounced, will now be put back on the open market. The second project, “Tunga,” won by Netflix at auction in 2019, is rooted in the mythology of the Shona culture and tells the story of a young girl who embarks on a quest to summon rain and save her community from a deadly drought. While “Tunga” remains at Netflix, it has been sent back into development.
Looking ahead, Netflix Animation has several promising releases in the pipeline. “Leo” features the voice of Adam Sandler as a lizard who has lived for decades as a class pet in a Florida school, promising to bring a unique and heartwarming story to viewers. Additionally, “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” is set to offer fans of the beloved franchise another delightful adventure.
Such turmoils are becoming more and more common, let’s see what they do.
