India’s reputed content creation studio Applause Entertainment has given us some really fine projects such as ‘Scam 1992’, ‘Criminal Justice’, and Ajay Devgn’s ‘Rudra: The Edge of Darkness’. And now, it is collaborating with former Indian actress Twinkle Khanna and Ellipsis Entertainment to adapt the former’s short story titled ‘Salaam Noni Appa’ for a feature film. The yet-untitled movie will be helmed by renowned ad filmmaker Sonal Dabral in his feature film directorial debut.
‘Salaam Noni Appa’ was a part of Twinkle Khanna’s feminism-themed anthology named ‘The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad’ which comprised four short stories and was published in the year 2016. The other three stories were ‘The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad’, ‘If the Weather Permits’, and ‘The Sanitary Man of Sacred Land.
The plot of Twinkle Khanna’s endearing story ‘Salaam Noni Appa’ revolves around the titular protagonist Noni Appa, who is portrayed as a widow, and her relationship with her sister Binnie. The story takes an interesting turn when Noni Appa falls in love with a younger man who is already married. ‘Salaam Noni Appa’ is reportedly loosely based on the relationship between Twinkle Khanna’s grandmother and her sister and has earlier been adapted into a play.
Salaam Noni Appa’s film adaptation is not the only movie that has been backed by Applause Entertainment. Previously, Applause has also produced Aparna Sen’s hard-hitting directorial ‘The Rapist’ starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Arjun Rampal, and Tanmay Dhanania.
Its forthcoming projects include Nandita Das’s next film starring Kapil Sharma, a rom-com starring Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi, and another female-centric project ‘Sharmaji Ki Beti’, amongst others. Stay tuned to Binged for the latest updates on the film adaptation of Twinkle Khanna’s short story ‘Salaam Noni Appa’.
