In a fantastic piece of update for fans of the 1996 epic disaster movie ‘Twister’, a big budget sequel is currently being planned by the makers. Titled ‘Twisters’, the second instalment of the enormous box office hit parent film is expected to commence production sometime in the early months of 2023.
A few years earlier, a ‘Twister’ reboot film was announced and ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ helmer Joseph Kosinski was tapped to direct. However, he later backed out due to scheduling conflicts with another project (Apple’s Formula One racing film featuring Brad Pitt). So, now, the makers are searching for a new director for ‘Twisters’. Amongst the contenders are Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane, The Boys, Prey), husband-wife filmmaker duo Dan Trachtenberg (Free Solo), and Travis Knight (ParaNorman, Bumblebee).
Directed by Jan de Bont, the parent film ‘Twister’ featured Helen Hunt and Late Bill Paxton as an estranged married couple and storm-chasers Dr. Jo Harding and Dr. Bill Harding, who team-up for a dangerous mission to install a tornado measuring device inside extremely violent tornadoes.
The in-the-works ‘Twister’ sequel ‘Twisters’ has been penned by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, The Midnight Sky) and the plotline will revolve around Helen Hunt’s Jo Harding’s character and her daughter with Dr. Bill Harding who has also become a storm-chaser like her mother and father. Interestingly, legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg, who was also the parent film’ executive producer, had supported the sequel’s script after reading it and ostensibly because of which ‘Twisters’ was given a go-ahead soon after.
Now, it would be interesting to see which filmmaker is finally shortlisted to direct the ‘Twister’ sequel ‘Twisters’. Considering his directorial filmography comprising two brilliantly executed films namely ‘Predator’ prequel ‘Prey’ and the sci-fi thriller ’10 Cloverfield Lane’, we think Dan Trachtenberg should be the most suited to direct ‘Twisters’, notwithstanding the other talented filmmakers under contention.
