Well guess who is at it again? That was rhetorical. If you guys saw the heading of this article, then what you read is true, Michael Bay has actually made a Covid-centric disaster flick titled ‘Songbird’ and its trailer released just a few hours prior. As many of you can understand, social media users have bombarded the comments section of this trailer, particularly on twitter.
Michael Bay has never been known to make “smart decisions” when it comes to his movies or for creating “smart movies”, but even a 5-year old toddler can tell you that this film is way too soon to have been made. Set in 2023 (the disaster flick), the world is undergoing it’s 4th year in lockdown and the coronavirus has mutated into Covid-23, the latest version of the virus even deadlier than ever before. Governments around the world have implemented harsh methods to get rid of all infected, keeping them in detention camps or killing them if they resist to go to these “safe medical havens”. And around this harsh theme, we get a love story where the main protagonist couple can’t even breathe in the same air as each other, because Covid (obviously).
At a time when Covid-19 is still affecting the world, with multiple countries beginning to reinstate lockdown due to the number of cases popping up, have increased to set new personal records (like Germany, France and Italy), Bay has done one of the most insensitive things during the Covid-19 pandemic. Over 45 million people got affected by the virus, with over a million people having lost their lives in the past 6-8 months; so yeah, it is TOO SOON.
So twitter is on a rampage, and for once, it is kind of justifiable. Sure, getting ahead of every other film maker, before they create a similar film is understandable, but no film creator would release this film concept “this early”, especially since the virus hasn’t died down yet. The appeal for this film is even understandable, surprisingly. But without even a proper cure or a vaccine found yet for “one of the biggest natural disasters of our time”, the timing of the film was way off. And by releasing this film, Bay might have just shortened his already diminishing career, along with anyone else involved in the process.
