There had been a lot of Covid-19 cases coming out of Germany in the past couple of weeks along with its neighbouring countries, mainly France and Italy. And a few hours ago, both the governments of Germany and France have decided to reinstate lockdown protocols for a month (at the very least), so as to reduce these record high coronavirus cases. So this means, no more theaters.
Naturally, the CEO of Germany’s primary cinema organization HDF Kino, Christine Berg has protested this move, citing that theaters (both local and chains) could be “driven to ruin.” I mean, of course they would protest. It is obviously the safer option, but at times like these, the government should be stepping in to help these companies financially, otherwise we are looking at the world-wide ruination of one entire sector of business.
Italy, which has seen a resurgence in Covid-19 cases, has already shut down their theaters a week prior. France has said that they too will follow suit with lockdown, starting from October 30th till at least December 1st. Obviously many theater owners are upset. They had spent a lot more capital, besides the crazy amount of losses they incurred during the last few months, so as to provide a safe and sanitary environment for the public to continue watching films at around 25-30 percent capacity. Without government help, there could be theaters folding due to pressure (if they haven’t already).
Cases have been on the rise in Europe. England and Netherlands have all reached an all-time high of daily cases. Of course, it is sad that we won’t be able to watch our favourite films in the theaters for some more time (for our European readers), but it is better to be safe than sorry. With financial aid, your local theaters and theater chains can come back stronger than ever. We just need to help our businesses in this time of crisis.
