Shakespeare’s stories have charmed us for centuries, and with the advent of new styles and mediums, we get to see the stories presented in a much better way. Movie adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays hold a very special place in the history of world cinema. Here is a recommendation for two wonderful movies based on the works of the master storyteller.
King Lear (2018) -Amazon Prime Video:
King Lear is one of the timeless stories that will never fail to move the human mind. It tells the story of an old King with three daughters and how he is banished from his own kingdom. The daughter she despised most gives him shelter but still the King gradually falls prey to Insanity. Anthony Hopkins plays the lead character and he is awesome as always. The cast also oncludes actors like Emma Thompson, Emily Watson, Jim Broadbent, Florence Pugh, Jim Carter, Andrew Scott etc. The movie is directed by Richard Eyre and has spectacular visuals and music. You will not regret watching it.
West Side Story (1961) – Amazon Prime Video:
Romeo And Juliet is one of the most adapted stories of all time and the story of rebellious love has attracted audiences for its rich and universal appeal. ‘West Side Story’ is a wonderful adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play and it came out in 1961. The movie was directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and starred actors like Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris. The story of the young lovers Romeo And Juliet is placed in a much modern setting in the New York of 50s. The movie is considered as one of the greatest musicals ever made. If you have not watched it, you should go for it this weekend. It is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video.
