The stage is all set for the 96th edition of the prestigious Oscar Awards, whose winners will be announced on 10th March in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Before the winners are announced on this date, the final nominees will be announced on 23rd January.
Recently, the Academy announced that out of 321 feature films from across the globe which qualified for the upcoming Oscars, 265 of those films are eligible for the ‘Best Picture’ Oscar category.
You might be surprised to know that the two critically admired Indian movies – Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s heartrending drama ‘12th Fail’ and the intense survival drama ‘2018’ were also included among those 265 films eligible for Oscars 2024.
Now, in case you’re wondering if both these Indian movies were unable to crack the 2024 Oscars shortlist, let us remind you that it was for the ‘International Feature Film’ category. So, apparently, they are still eligible to compete for the ‘Best Picture’ Oscar category.
But does being eligible mean that either ‘12th Fail’ or ‘2018’ have a fighting chance to win, or even get nominated for, the coveted ‘Best Picture’ Oscar trophy. To cut the long story short: technically, it’s possible. But considering the buzz and impact films such as ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, and ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ have been creating in the awards circuit, it seems to be a far-cry that either ‘12th Fail’ or ‘2018’ can make the final cut. Despite both these films being outstanding in their own rights.
To win an Oscar, a film apparently shouldn’t be just a very good one, but stakeholders should also get thoroughly involved in marketing their project for the intended audience (Oscar Jury) and to create as much awareness as possible. The way ‘RRR’ did last year. But for that, there’s a lot of money involved, the competition and its prospects, etc. We’ll be the happiest people on the planet if either ‘12th Fail’ or ‘2018’ get an Oscar nom because they are both deserving, but the ground realities give a different picture.
