In 2023, there were major surprises, especially with the phenomenon of Barbenheimer changing the course of box office (BO) history as two competing films crossed the $2 billion mark. Even Warner Bros. finished the year in style as three of their big titles clashed and hovered around the BO podium.
Even Wonka became a big hit as its BO success lap is still going on at a good pace. Besides that, though Disney took some major hits with Marvel content and their animations, their sister production houses like 20th Century Fox gave a boost.
The Super Mario Bros also managed to be the BO success story. Even John Wick 4 by Lionsgate got some major attention and even marks its place in the top 10 of the biggest BO hits.
But let’s do a short analysis of the studios and their registered domestic income.
With films like Oppenheimer and Super Mario Bros managing to take Universal Pictures to the very top of the chart. Besides that, they also had Fast X, Five Nights At Freddy’s, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish giving them a necessary boost to reach a staggering $1.81 billion.
Disney, despite facing major setbacks at the BO, takes the second place with ease. Although their Marvel content didn’t perform successfully during the end of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 gave them a significant boost and stands as their biggest domestic success.
They also had The Little Mermaid and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which contributed to a good overall boost. With some minor BO successes as well, Disney grossed $1.45 billion in the past year.
Warner Bros was breathing down the neck of Disney as they grossed $1.42 billion, and Barbie became their biggest asset. Besides Barbie, they also had titles such as Wonka, The Wonka, and The Nun 2, which provided a healthy injection of finances. Even films like Aquaman and The Color Purple are still earning bucks for WB.
