After grabbing the lucrative five-year media rights to Indian cricket, Viacom18 has grabbed its next biggie in the world of sports. This afternoon, the Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) announced the new owners of the exclusive media rights for the popular Indian football tournament, the Indian Super League (ISL). And guess who it turned out to be – none other than Viacom18 Media Private Limited!
Viacom18 will own exclusive media rights for Indian Super League for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. The media rights will give them sole broadcasting and streaming rights for the Indian Super League. For those who don’t know, the 10th season of the Indian Super League (ISL) will begin from 21st September, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi. The first match of the season will be between popular teams Kerala Blasters FC and Bengaluru FC.
The Indian Super League Football matches will be telecast on TV on Viacom18’s Sports 18 channel. They will stream online on Viacom18’s OTT platform, Jio Cinema. The matches will be broadcast and streamed in multiple Indian languages, to appeal to a wide demographic of Indian viewers. Like its strategy with cricket streaming, the ISL matches will be available for digital viewers to stream for free on Jio Cinema.
Sports fans will know that the Indian Super League is India’s premier football league. By grabbing media rights for the ISL, Viacom18 now has exclusive rights for every major cricket and football tournament, including the FIFA World Cup, ISL, IPL and rights to all cricket played by India in the next five years.
Viacom18 and Jio Cinema have been going after premier sporting events with more aggressiveness than ever. They have realised that the advertising revenue these sporting events bring in is the real golden goose of the world of entertainment these days.
