It seems video games being developed into feature films and TV series is the trend these days. And the latest addition to the list is the much-loved award-winning ‘Death Stranding’, which will be getting a film adaptation.
The movie is currently in development and not many details have been revealed regarding the cast and crew associated with the project. As per reports, the film will introduce new elements and characters within the Death Stranding universe. The video game’s designer Hideo Kojima under his studio Kojima Productions will partner with production company Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce the film.
However, unlike other big-budget film adaptations of video games, the upcoming ‘Death Stranding’ movie aims to be an intimate and grounded movie despite all the supernatural elements in its premise. As per the makers, “Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom.”
For those unversed, ‘Death Stranding’ is a 2019 action game developed by Kojima Productions for the PlayStation 4. The game is set in the United States following a cataclysmic ‘Death Stranding’ event which opened a doorway between the living and the dead, leading to creatures from the afterlife to roam Earth.
Players control Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier tasked with delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network. Alongside ‘The Walking Dead’ star Reedus, the game features actors Mads Mikkelsen( Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore), Léa Seydoux(James Bond: No Time To Die), and Margaret Qualley(Maid) amongst others, in addition to the likenesses of film directors Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn as supporting characters.
Interestingly, the news comes a day after the announcement of another popular action-filled video game ‘God Of War’ getting a live-action TV series for Prime Video. Having enough plot and potential for expansion, these made well could be a great watch for fans of the games and others alike.
