Actor Vijay Sethupathi is a rare gem for Indian Cinema. A star of such stature, who’s not image conscious- he’s played everything from a loser lover to a transgender. An artist with such a varied filmography that could put many of his contemporaries to shame. One can say he’s the Akshay Kumar of Kollywood in many ways. An actor who’s grown from film to film over the years, played a variety of roles (even God, like Akshay Kumar) and probably as busy as him, giving us many films in a year. Though, this time we have a flipside to this.
For whatever reasons, his signing on too many films has cost him this time. Two back-to-back OTT releases have proven to be duds- Netflix’s ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ with Raashi Khanna and Disney+Hotstar‘s ‘Annabelle Sethupathi‘ with Taapsee Pannu. Both films have been received negatively by word of mouth and are getting some pathetic reviews to say the least. The actor has also been receiving some flak regarding his recent film choices, including his last theatre release, ‘Laabam’.
Recently, actor Vijay Sethupathi has been all over the place. With not one or two, but four releases this month, them being ‘Laabam‘, ‘Tughlaq Durbar‘, ‘Annabelle Sethupathi’ and ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi‘, combined with multiple interviews and appearances on reality shows etc, have fans got bored of him? How much is too much? After all, how was a theatre release after so long, ‘Laabam’ such a disaster?
However, to be fair, both ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ and ‘Annabelle Sethupathi’ had interesting premises, but were handled badly. The plot development, screenplay and basic execution failed miserably, barely making these movies watchable. It all comes down to this- how much really can the actor do to salvage a film? Having said that though, for an actor of such fine caliber, one who can play hero and villain with equal finesse, is this sudden criticism too much? What are your views?
