Vir Das has had a rough journey when it comes to Bollywood. He tried his luck, did some good projects and some terrible ones, but somewhere deep down, it always felt that Bollywood hadn’t found a way to harness his true potential.
Right now, Vir Das is one of the most established comedians in India who has 3 Netflix specials and his own Netflix original show. I know it doesn’t affect the article in any way, but he also has an honorary doctorate from Knox college, but before he reached where he is today, Vir Das has had a roller coaster ride trying to cement his place in the traditional Indian entertainment industry that never quite understood his talent.
He was reduced to several cameos in films, and some projects which though had some exciting premises were not that big at the box office and then there was ‘mastizaade’. I think we can all agree that it was a huge mistake, but he powered through it all and has finally found a place that can explore his creative potential in the OTT landscape.
This thesis is only reassured by the fact that he has been nominated for 3 Filmfare OTT awards and it seems like there are more projects on the way in the near future. Vir Das has always been appreciated as a comedian, but his acting skills were also given some recognition for his roles in ‘Delhi Belly’ and his Netflix original series ‘Hasmukh’.
As a fan of his intellectual comedy and analogies, I hope that he continues on this trajectory and delivers us even greater content in the future.
