In its recent earnings call for Q1 FY2024, Vodafone Idea (Vi) unveiled its ‘Vi One’ offering, a bundled plan that combines fiber, mobility, and over-the-top (OTT) services in a single package.
This move aims to reposition Vi amidst challenges such as declining earnings, subscriber loss, and massive debts owed to the government. ‘Vi One’ was launched in partnership with You Broadband in 12 cities across Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, with plans to extend the service to other circles via collaboration with different ISPs.
But, there are certain big challenges.
What about Jio and Airtel? Both the service providers are already big into the market and they provide certain OTT apps not only in their recharge plans but also cable internet services.
With losing customers and growing problems, it will be interesting to see how Vi tackles the competition. Airtel is not that prominent in this segment because their services are expensive and c’mon we all know that Jio has emerged beastly huge into the OTT market.
Also, the TRAI release of a consultation paper on OTT regulations is a thing to think about.
If OTT platforms are required to pay network fees, should the telecom companies also pay for their apps? The question remains absurd.
However, the competition is already very very high. And it doesn’t look like Vi will be able to touch JioCinema in near future.
