On the heels of Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series ‘WandaVision’ bagging an impressive 23 Emmy Award nominations, including one for Outstanding Directing for Matt Shakman, the filmmaker has also reportedly (via Deadline) been roped in to helm the next ‘Star Trek’ movie for Paramount Pictures and franchise veteran J.J. Abrams.
Previously, Matt Shakman had directed episodes of the comedy-drama series ‘The Great’ for which he had received an Emmy nomination. Besides, Matt Shakman’s television shows’ directorial credits also include ‘The Boys’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Fargo’, ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, ‘Six Feet Under’, and ‘House M.D.’, amongst others. The next ‘Star Trek’ film would be his second feature film directorial outing after the Liam Hemsworth starrer ‘Cut Banks’.
For those who are not aware, the cult ‘Star Trek’ franchise started off as a television series in the 1960s and was based on space exploration adventures that took place in the 23rd century. The franchise was taken forward by seven spin-off series and thirteen films. The last film titled ‘Star Trek Beyond’ came out in the year 2016. The combined box office earnings of the last three ‘Star Trek’ movies grossed over a whopping $1 billion worldwide.
The first two 21st century reboot films were helmed by J.J. Abrams himself while the third film was directed by Justin Lin. These three films featured Chris Pine in the lead role. The upcoming and yet untitled ‘Star Trek’ movie is expected to commence production from around March next year based on a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (Sierra Burgess Is a Loser). Whether Chris Pine reprises his role in the next film remains to be seen.
The new ‘Star Trek’ movie is ostensibly slated to release on June 9, 2023.
