Films serve as a medium to exchange culture, ideas, and stories from different regions. Adapting these stories into other languages allows a broader cultural dialogue. To move forward with this vision, production houses must take the initiative.
We see the beginning of this as Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group has taken a significant step by partnering with CJ ENM, the powerhouse behind Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning Parasite. This collaboration aims to develop, finance, and distribute English-language and Korean-language remakes of each studio’s films.
Under the agreement, Warner Bros. will make English-language remakes of CJ ENM’s films, while CJ ENM will focus on Korean-language adaptations of Warner Bros.’ titles. Each studio will oversee the development and production of their respective remakes, with the partner studio offering creative input on key elements such as writers, directors, producers, cast, and budget.
Warner Bros.’ extensive library boasts over 12,500 films, including classics like Casablanca, A Streetcar Named Desire, Rebel Without a Cause, and modern hits like Harry Potter and Barbie. CJ ENM, Korea’s largest media conglomerate, has an acclaimed lineup of Korean films such as Parasite, The Handmaiden, and Past Lives.
This collaboration can be a very important moment in bringing Korean stories to an international audience and introducing niche Hollywood narratives to Korean viewers, helping a richer cultural exchange.
