Greta Gerwig’s fantasy adventure comedy movie ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling went on a box-office rampage after its theatrical release on 21st July alongside Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’. Besides receiving rave reviews all around, the film has grossed over a whopping $1.4 billion at the box office globally.
After Barbie’s release, film enthusiasts began contemplating its bright 2023-24 Oscar prospects in multiple categories. And now, as per a report by Variety, Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that the movie will be campaigned for the coveted Academy Awards.
Although the confirmation itself was unsurprising, the new update is that the makers are planning Barbie’s Oscar campaign for ‘The Best Original Screenplay’ category. Considering the fact that the film is based on the immensely popular Mattel doll of the same name, some fans thought that the film might be sent in the ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ category. However, the final move apparently makes sense because Barbie’s credits mention that the movie is “based on Barbie’ by Mattel” so the film is drawing from the doll itself and not any “previously published material”.
Moreover, it has also been confirmed that Ryan Gosling’s name would be officially submitted for the Oscar in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category. Besides, ‘Barbie’ is expected to compete in several other important categories like ‘Best Actress’, ‘Best Picture’, and ‘Best Director’, etc. at the Academy Awards. And in doing that, it will most likely compete with Christopher Nolan’s star-studded and critically admired film ‘Oppenheimer’.
‘Barbie’ is based on the immensely popular Barbie dolls made by the multinational toy company Mattel. The film follows the story of the titular character (played by Margot Robbie), whose perfect life takes an interesting turn, and she decides to take a trip to the real world along with an equally inquisitive Ken (Ryan Gosling) after going through an existential crisis. After reaching real-world Los Angeles, the duo gets a reality check as they discover the existence of sexism and patriarchy. As of now, the film is streaming in India on a rental / pay-per-view basis on Amazon Prime Video, BMS Stream, and the Apple TV platforms.
