Warner Bros Discovery has unveiled its first quarter results. The conglomerate ended March 2024 with a total of 99.6 million global streaming subscribers, highlighting a noticeable growth of 1.9 million subscribers from the last year’s value, 97.7 million.
Increasing advertising revenue and subscriber prices aided WBD in preserving its segment revenue, which remained almost similar, $2.46 billion, compared to last year. Though, its DTC (Direct-To-Consumer) minted an impressive profit of $86 million, which encompasses its premium pay-TV and streaming services, a substantial increase from last year’s $50 million profit.
Warner Bros Discovery’s dipped by 7% in Q1 2024, reaching $9.96 billion, compared to previous year’s revenue of $10.231 billion.
The company reported a net loss of 966 million, which is still an improvement over the year-ago quarter’s loss of $1.07 billion. It had high hopes from the video game, “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”. However, the creation from Rocksteady Studios failed to live up to the people’s expectations and ended up being a disaster.
Content sales enhanced by 8%, but distribution revenue and TV ad sales dropped by 7% and 11%, respectively.
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire and Dune: Part Two turned out box office blockbusters from WBD this year. However, it should be noted that the majority of the profits from these movies will go straight to the company’s co-studio, Legendary Pictures.
Warner Bros Discovery unveiled its Q1 2024 earnings after recently announcing to launch a new streaming bundle for the US audiences, which will comprise Max, Disney+, and Hulu. This upcoming bundle will consist of both ad-free and ad-supported plans. The conglomerate plans to repurchase $1.75 million of debt in the next quarter. In the first quarter, it repaid $1.1 billion of debt, culminating the quarter with a staggering total of $43.2 billion of gross debt.
David Zaslav, WBD’s CEO and president, seemed “please” with the company’s overall performance in the first quarter. He also promised to bestow a strong content lineup for Max, which will soon be available to 29 nations across Europe. Stay tuned for more updates.
